Many of us are looking to lose weight, whether we need to shed a few pounds or undergo a transformative weight loss. While the journey to lose weight takes patience, dedication and a positive mind frame, your hard work will eventually show. Unfortunately there are a number of sneaky things that sabotage our efforts. Eating and Drinking “Diet” Foods and Beverages
One of the number one culprit of weight loss failure is the consumption of products that are labeled “diet” food and drinks. These items are typically labeled as low-fat, low-calorie or reduced sugar. What they all have in common is they are heavily processed products that don’t even qualify as real food.
Processed foods that are marketed as “diet” foods have had the fat and calories greatly reduced, but often have severely increased the amount of sodium, food additive and sugar to increase their flavor and texture. The body gets confused when eating these chemically laden foods and may produce cravings for the calories or fat that it thinks it should be eating. Stick to whole, unprocessed foods and drinks to avoid this weight loss trap.
Using Exercise as an Excuse to Eat More
Have you ever said to yourself “Well, I just took an hour step aerobics class, so I deserve a treat”? Don’t erase all of the benefits of exercising by binge eating junk food in an effort to “treat” yourself. You may very well need more calories when exercising, but choose high quality, nutritious foods that are modest in calories to sustain your body while training.
Starving yourself all day long while busy at work will only lead to overeating and poor choices later that night. Inconsistent eating leads to blood sugar spikes and tells the metabolism to slow down and hold on to body fat in fear that it may not get another meal. Weight loss specialists can help you figure out when the optimal times are for you to eat each day. It’s also worth noting that skipping breakfast can be detrimental to your weight loss goals. According to a report by Cornell University, not only is skipping breakfast not an effective strategy for losing weight, but it can increase your odds of experiencing a heart attack by 27%.
Drinking Your Calories
Guzzling down sodas, teas and fancy coffee drinks will sabotage anyone’s weight loss efforts. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, on any given day, 50% of the United States’ population consumes sugary drinks, with 1 in 4 consuming at least 200 calories from such drinks and 5% consuming at least 567 calories. This doesn’t even take the effort of chewing, so drinking feels easy and it’s quick to pack on the calories without realizing it. Stick to good old-fashioned water for the perfect weight loss drink. If you can’t give up your daily cup of Joe, make sure you are drinking it without sugars or creamers. While black coffee make not sound particularly great, it will save you inches on your midsection.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
It has been proven time and time again that adequate sleep is essential to weight loss. Aim for at least 7 hours a night, but if you need more, then be sure to make time for it. Cutting back on sleep will quickly throw your weight loss efforts out of whack. When you’re running short on sleep, it’s easy to grab a latte or other heavy calorie pick me up to get you going.
Losing weight does not have to be all about deprivation. Re-frame your mindset and make the journey one of getting healthy and feeling great. Above all else, do not let these sneaky things sabotage all of your hard work. Be mindful of your actions and choices and the weight loss will follow.
